Well, I finally caved and signed up for an LJ. I didn't care about peer pressure back in high school, but somehow 15 years later ... *shakes head sadly*

The main purpose of this blog is to keep track of other people's LJ activities. I may post about myself on occasion, but nobody should be holding their breaths. ;)

edit: Now that I've tinkered my color schemes into quite an interesting mishmash, perhaps I'd better stop before it gets worse...

Heh, you've been talking to Zephyr haven't you. ;)

Actually I'm whichever you think I am. I'm not particular, and I make a point of not specifying. Most of the chat regulars have decided on "dude," though.

Sometime in the near future I'll probably have to write an LJ post explaining everything. :p *le sigh*

*is confused now*

What LJ post? I've only written two, and the other one was about an RPoL outage ...

Gender choice? Emo? To whom do you refer?

Heh, I kind of figured you meant kate.

However, she's not just being angsty about it. What she has is a congenital birth defect that is actually pretty well-documented, medically-speaking. (And for that matter, there's some medical evidence that she has one of the genetic birth defects too, but that's still being looked at, last I asked her). The congenital birth defect is called "gender dysphoria" and my favorite website for explaining it is here (http://transsexual.org/What.html). (Try to ignore the fact that it's pink. ;) ) Basically, it's caused by problems in timing of hormones (mainly testosterone) during brain development.

Just imagine what your life would've been like if you'd been exactly the way you are now, with the way you think and approach things, your likes and dislikes, etc., except in a female body...

Maybe you should tell her that then.

Adding on to the previous comment, she would probably want to know how she's being taken. She's pretty hard to offend, and she likes honesty. (Just watch out for the gaggle of supporters...)

It doesn't sound like you do understand about the disorder. It's not a lifestyle choice. Pretend we're talking about something like cerebral palsy, and see if you think the same things.

Hehehe... yes, I get the gist of what you're trying to say.

However, you did start out this conversation by referring to kate as "he". Secondly, most medical disorders aren't touchy subjects ;), and gender dysphoria needn't be either. And finally, transition is not a lifestyle choice; it's the recommended medical treatment for gender dysphoria.

My impression is that your perspective is more like "I've got nothing against transpeople (or gays, or whatnot (which by the way are also not lifestyle choices but that's a different argument)). Why I'd even share an elevator with one."

There's nothing wrong with that as a starting point per se. Most people start there when they don't really understand yet. What matters is whether you move forward from there.

Well, if you hang around in rpol chat long enough, you'll be exposed to all sorts of non-central-Texan-WASP perspectives. ;) We're astoundingly diverse in there.
