Recent news article: Gigantic Bird Eats Baby Bunny
Me: Poor bunny. :(
There are really two questions involved.
1. Do you care about the bunny?
2. Do you care that I'm sad?
Even if you don't care about the bunny, it's still helpful to reply with a "Yeah, poor bunny" because you care that I care.
Also: the time to say "it's just a virtual pet! It's not even real!" is not right after I've spent all night gathering clicks from everyone who had the misfortune to be online on my IM lists, while watching the timer count down, and then having the egg or hatchling die anyway.
(Especially if you follow that up with "care about my woes instead! right now!" Don't wonder why I'm disinclined to talk to you the next day if you do that. Just saying.)

2. Yes I care that you're sad. That's why I didn't post the link in chat when I saw that article some days ago. Because I knew it would upset you as I know that you like bunnies.
The second reason why I didn't show it to you were the fact that the article upset me too and I closed the window pretty fast.
I really should click on your eggs more often...:(( I wish I had been online...
