A meme that actually interests me
Oct. 1st, 2006 11:18 pm(from tylorva)
Name 12 characters you have played in RPGs, before looking at the questions that follow. List your characters numbered 1 to 12, with the name of the RPG you played them in. Once you've picked your 12 characters, look at the questions and answer accordingly. (No peeking until you've picked your characters!) Put your answers behind a LJ-cut.
1. Haywood Jablomey - kender Malkavian, looks like an 8 year old boy. He started out in a 1st ed. VtM tabletop game back in the early 90s, got cameos in other tabletop groups over the years, and has been on RPoL three times (including a current game). He's great fun to play, works best in a group, and probably best represents my Loonie tendencies.
2. Thomas Cougar - Gangrel, native American shaman. VtM 3rd edition. Originally created for an IM game in 2002. Was the seed that spawned my novel series, Fortress Launne, for which there's currently about 6 planned books (though so far I've only written two). He appeared in a long-running VtM game on RPoL called VtM: Eternal Nights, but none of the events from that game are included in my "canon" version of his story.
3. Antoine Reiter - Tremere, Vampire: the Dark Ages. First created as part of the above-mentioned novel series, and then I thought I'd see if I could flesh him out a little by turning him into a PC. He's been in two RPoL games, though the first one only lasted a month. Second one is still going and has been since late 2003.
4. Flint Haddock - Wraith: the Oblivion. The earliest version of him was in a tabletop game back in the mid-90s. Now he's in an RPoL game that had been going since early 2004, died mid-2005, then just came back to life in the past month (Shadowed Liberty, run by Tylorva, from whom I got this meme ;) ). Basically he's a taxi driver that was trying to get his life back together before his untimely demise.
5. Ryan Decker - Mage: the Ascension. A Son of Ether that drives a Winnebago-sized, bright yellow VW bus (his mobile sanctum). Got created somewhere during the blur of tabletops in the mid-90s. :) I've played him in a number of tabletop groups, as he's one of the regulars in my grab-bag of characters to play on the fly (the same way Haywood (#1) is). He has also appeared in the IM game where I created Thomas (#2).
6. Rumen Radomir - Anitaverse master vampire. Has been in a freeform Anitaverse game on RPoL since late 2003. 800 years old, was originally a Hungarian monk. Calls cats, feeds off of fear. Is the Master of the City's second.
7. Aaron Norwood - Anitaverse necromancer. Same game as Rumen (#6). A mild-mannered guy in his mid-20s who would really rather not be a necromancer at all. Runs a bookstore.
8. Mindy Johnson - my first VtM LARP character. A Malkavian with a stuffed dog and multiple personalities. But she wasn't silly! Honest! She was very influential in the Underworld, where she and a Ventrue guy imported exotic illegal drugs, and got in major trouble with the local Garou (there was a co-running Garou LARP). I've also played her on RPoL in a 3rd ed. VtM.
9. Sarabelle Brownfield - a character that was in a VtM LARP, and my first real brush with Wraith. She was a Risen posing as a Toreador. A music professor at the local university. She became very good friends with the Tremere primogen (gave him private piano lessons), who despite having huge amounts of spirit thaumaturgy, never caught on to what she was. Said Tremere primogen eventually helped her become the Toreador primogen. :D
10. Grog the Troll - started out as a tabletop Shadowrun character, later got ported to Changeling: the Dreaming for a short-lived RPoL game, then a one-shot tabletop CtD, then a short-lived CtD LARP. (Also very briefly tabletop 2nd AD&D but that game never actually started.) Big tall guy with heavy-duty weaponry. Came across as not very bright, though he was smarter than he let on. My favorite moment with him was when the runners were turning an empty lot into a park, and he was trying to explain grass to another troll. Other Troll: "what's it taste like?" Grog: "Mmmmm. Tastes like bread. But if you smoke it ... it will make you verrry happy." Tabletop group died laughing.
11. Katrina Dusek - started out in a freeform Stargate game on RPoL that ran from summer 2003 to summer 2004. She was the leader of an SG team that specialized in covert ops. Now she's a Malk professional assassin in a VtM game on RPoL, and also a werelioness in the Anitaverse freeform with Rumen (#6) and Aaron (#7).
12. Molly Bradford - Mage: the Ascension. Virtual Adept that defected from the Technocracy. Was created for the RPoL game that Thomas (#2) was in. Everybody loved how cute she was, which I actually found a bit mystifying. I guess she came across as the perfect damsel in distress. I've played her in one other VtM game on RPoL, mostly to give me and another player some closure on our characters after the messy demise of Eternal Nights.
Hmmm. I could go on and on. :) There's been a lot of fun ones over the years. Anyway, on to the questions behind the cut...
1. Who would make a better college professor: 6, or 11?
Rumen or Katrina? HAHAHA! Rumen as a college professor. *snicker-snort* I guess I'd have to go with Katrina.
2) Do you think 2 is hot? How hot?
Who came up with these questions?? :p
Actually yes I do. In my mind's eye Thomas is very handsome. But what can you expect from a Gary Stu. ;) I'm not sure that his attractiveness was particularly well-conveyed in the RPoL game he was in, but the GM of the IM game liked him quite a lot.
3) 12 sends 8 on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?
Molly sends Mindy on a mission. That is so wrong on so many levels that I don't even know where to start!!
About the only thing Molly would send anyone on is a trip to get pastries. And Mindy wouldn't go. :p If Mindy felt generous that day she might send one of her minions, though.
4) What is, or would be, 9's favourite book?
Sarabelle's favorite book would probably be the scrapbook of Thomas Sand, who was her star student that died tragically in a plane crash shortly before game start. As for published books, she's trying to tell me about some kind of boring feel-good mainstream crap that I don't know anything about. So, one of those. She likes poetry too. (Edit: I finally remembered the name of the genre - literary fiction. That's what she reads.)
5) Would it make more sense for 2 to swear fealty to 6, or the other way around?
Well, 2 is Thomas and 6 is Rumen. Hmmmm. Oddly enough, Rumen is more likely to swear fealty to Thomas, even though he's the sort that would demand fealty from people most of the time (except ... not. It's not exactly fealty per se that he demands). Thomas wouldn't swear fealty to Rumen of his own volition, as Rumen has enough monstrous qualities to him that Thomas is fairly horrified.
6) For some reason, 5 is looking for a room-mate. Should they share a studio apartment with 9, or 10?
Ryan is looking for a roommate, and the choices are either Sarabelle or Grog. *head, desk*
First, Ryan lives in his bus and doesn't let anyone else into it ever. Barring that difficulty, though, he and Grog would probably get along really well. I can definitely see them go adventuring together. ;)
7) 2, 7, and 12 have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
That would be Thomas, Aaron, and Molly. Those three would be able to have a very civilized dinner together, I think (though Thomas wouldn't eat anything). Somewhere upscale, but not formal. And the conversation would be very lively, just talking about themselves with each other. Yes, those three would become fast friends.
8) 3 challenges 10 to a duel. What happens?
Antoine challenges Grog to a duel? Antoine has clearly lost his mind. Unless it's a duel of wits or something non-physical. The circumstances would have to be extremely bizarre to cause Antoine to do such a thing, though in the game he's in on RPoL, I could actually see such a situation arising...
In a straightforward physical duel, Antoine is toast. He'd be honorable enough not to cheat, but he'd only be in it if it's to gain an advantage elsewhere. E.g. to stall for time while someone else is doing something.
In a battle of wits, Grog is ... well, not toast necessarily, but less likely to win.
9) If 1 stole 8's most precious possession, how would they get it back?
1 would be Haywood, who is indeed a klepto, so it's so totally perfect that he'd be stealing someone's precious possessions.
8 is Mindy. Very bad move, Haywood. :p She'd send in her goons to strip search him and ransack wherever he was living at the time, and track down everywhere he's been since the theft and everyone he's talked to. If that didn't find it back for her, she'd turn the city upside down.
It just occurred to me that her most precious possession would be her stuffed dog. But Haywood is highly unlikely to manage to run off with that, as she keeps it with her at all times and is highly paranoid about making sure that it's there.
10) Suggest a title for a story in which 7 and 12 both attain what they most desire.
Aaron and Molly, hmm.
Aaron wants to find a way to uncurse his family line so that he can get married to his beloved Alice and have kids without passing on untold tragedies to his descendants.
Molly wanted freedom. Freedom to know all she wanted to know about magic and not just what the Technocrats dictated for consensual reality. Freedom to study it without threat of being 'reprogrammed.' Also, she wanted friends, family, a normal life. A dog to call her own. She wanted to be a regular girl.
"The True Meaning of Life" might be an appropriate title.
11) What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 and 1 to work together?
Haywood and Flint. That's easy enough. As long as someone that Haywood likes tells him to do what Flint wants, and Flint is also nice to Haywood, it wouldn't be a problem. The only difficulty would be them being able to communicate, since Flint is a wraith and Haywood has no special affinity to those.
12) If 7 visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
Aaron and I would get along pretty well. He's a good houseguest and would be very tolerant of my sucky hosting abilities. He's fairly easygoing as well and flexible about things to do. He likes trying new things. I'd probably take him out restauranting all weekend.
13) If you could command 3 to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?
Command Antoine to do something? Hmmm. I have no idea. We don't share any common frames of references. Maybe make it so that I can have a cat in here without getting in trouble with the landlady.
14) Does anyone on your friends list resemble 11 (either in appearance or personality)?
Katrina? Hmm. Not for appearance (for those of you where I actually know what you look like. Robert would actually be the closest if we're going by hair color and complexion.)
In terms of personality? Sammi would be closest there.
15) If 2 had to choose sides between 4 and 5, which would it be?
If Thomas had to choose sides between Flint and Ryan?
Ironically, Flint and Ryan were cut from the same archetype and have many similarities to each other. However, Thomas actually knows Ryan as a friend, and has never met Flint, so loyalty would have him sticking with Ryan.
16) What might 10 shout while charging into battle?
Aha - that would be Grog. The one on the list who is most likely to charge into battle. ;) I think he'd shout something like "SPOOOOONNN!!!" (a reference to The Tick) At least the CtD version of him would.
17) If you chose a song to represent 8, which song would you choose?
Heh, there are people on my list who actually do have theme songs associated with them, but Mindy isn't one of them. She's saying Remembrance by Delerium (Karma album).
18) 1, 6, and 12 are having dim sum at a Chinese restaurant. There is only one scallion pancake left, and they all reach for it at the same time. Who gets to eat it?
Haywood, Rumen, and Molly. Rumen would win, no question. Heh, what an interesting contrast from the dinner up at question 7. It would probably be a tense, silent table where Rumen scares Haywood and Molly into being meek and submissive.
19) What might be a good pick-up line for 2 to use on 10?
Umm. Thomas wouldn't attempt to pick up Grog in a million years. Neither of them are remotely gay.
20) What would 5 most likely be arrested for?
Heheheh... Ryan has actually been almost-arrested. I think he was caught at the scene of some kind of violence, even though he had nothing to do with it, and he did a terrible job of talking his way out of it. He was in a hurry to get somewhere else at the time and couldn't be bothered to wait for them to let everyone leave. His attempt to leave drew attention to him.
Failing that, if anyone could ever actually find him or his bus (high arcane for both), probably for violating traffic laws or disturbing public peace (playing music too loudly).
21) What is 6's secret?
Rumen's secret is how much he misses his human servant, Alec, who was killed by a vampire hunter 150 years ago while defending Rumen's life. They were together for centuries before Alec's death.
22) If 11 and 9 were racing to a destination, who would get there first?
If Katrina and Sarabelle were racing to a destination, Katrina is more likely to get there first. She's a professional assassin and has better options. Sarabelle would stick with using conventional transportation.
23) If you had to walk home through a bad neighborhood late at night, would you feel safer in the company of 7 or 8?
Aaron or Mindy? Well, if we assume that both of those were actually friendly to me, then Mindy, since she's the one who causes neighborhoods to be bad in the first place and nobody in their right mind would try to touch her. And if they did, she can easily dispose of them.
If the question is for which one would be more likely to be out to get me, that would be Mindy, so I'd feel safer with Aaron.
24) 1 and 9 reluctantly team up to save the world from the threat posed by 4's sinister secret organization. 11 volunteers to help them, but it is later discovered that he/she is actually a spy for 4. Meanwhile, 4 has kidnapped 12 in an attempt to force their surrender. Following the wise advice of 5, they seek out 3, who gives them what they need to complete their quest. What title would you give this fic?
Haywood and Sarabelle team up against Flint's secret organization. Katrina volunteers to help but is secretly working for Flint. Meanwhile, Flint kidnaps Molly to force the protagonists to surrender. Following the advice of Ryan, they seek out Antoine, who help them defeat Flint.
Hmmmmm. Well, it's not totally implausible. The only one who is implausible is Flint, who doesn't have anything even remotely resembling an organization. He's just a taxi driver. Replace Flint with Mindy (8) and we might be talking workable plot.
As for a title, maybe "The Mad Taxi Caper."
That was fun. Very thought-provoking. Good for jogging loose some writer's block under the right circumstances. And very timely too, what with Nanowrimo looming on the horizon. :)
