My October

It's been a busy, busy month.

At my main job, I'm working on learning PostgreSQL, PHP, and modern HTML, with R and IDL on the backburner, and Matlab7 to bang my head against. The guy who was mentoring me quit working here a week or so ago, very suddenly - before I was up to speed on PHP, which means now I have to figure it out on my own (or lean on analog or one of Avatar[Wolf]'s friends).

At my backup weekend job, the new manager and staff have started work. He didn't think he needed to be trained by the old manager, so they've been stumbling around making all sorts of mistakes that they really needn't've made. This has not been a pleasant thing to watch.

The annual Open House for my main job was on Oct. 13. I helped out beforehand with some graphs, and during it with boat tours.

My 15-year high school reunion was on the 20th. I made a newsletter for it. Basically this consisted of laying out blurbs and photos submitted by former classmates talking about what they're up to in their lives. It took about three days. Then I drove 800+ miles to Indiana for the reunion itself. While there, I also visited with my brother and a cousin's family. I met my 3-year old cousin-once-removed, who is an adorable little boy.

Right after I got back from that, I did a nightwatch gig for the aquarium next door to where I work. This consisted of two nights of skulking in the shadows around a dorm full of schoolchildren, watching them sleep. Since I was also attempting to do my dayjob at the same time, that meant 16 hours of work per day.

While I was in Indiana, the door locks on my car went glitchy. So now I'm psyching up to do battle with the retards of Saturn customer service to get it fixed - hopefully for free, because they were supposed to have already fixed it before, and I paid exorbitant sums the first time.

I've got my annual physical planned for next week, and then I really do have to start thinking about Nanowrimo.
